Mobile Internet Making Waves

Posted by Lisa Shepherd

Categories Marketing Tactics

Earlier this week in a conference at Google’s headquarters, Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker made an interesting presentation on Mobile Internet. Its key point is that mobile Internet use is growing much faster than desktop Internet use did a decade ago due to the convergence of five key trends:

– growth of 3G mobile networks

– social networking

– video over the internet

– voice over the internet

–  mobile devices like the iPhone

The implication – mobile Internet is going to be huge. As she puts it: “Rapid Ramp of Mobile Internet Usage Will be a Boon to Consumers and Some Companies Will Likely Win Big (Potentially Very Big) While Many Will Wonder What Just Happened.”

If you’re interested in reading more, you can see her 424-page report here.

Mobile internet presents interesting opportunities for marketers. Here are a few…

– Local ads that use GPS to target potential customers when they’re near a particular location.

– Rich-internet ads that use HTML 5. Users will get ads similar to those built on Flash, without the excessive bandwidth/CPU/battery-life drain of Flash.

– iPhone’s iAd features will usher in an era of ad-interactivity. With 60% of iAd revenue going back to ad developers, advertising professionals and programmers should pay –close attention to the platform.

…This is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s going to be interesting to see how the mobile web develops.
